Take Ner'zuhl for example, who can be seen as both a warlock and necromancer. While ingame Warlocks focus more on fel and demons ingame, necromancy could easily be a warlock specialization.

Long answer: depends, some books are amazing as lore substitutes, other books are basically mandatory for understanding current plotlines while still being retconned by those same plotlines.
