Can anyone help decode the serial number? 6K232XX. Gun is in great shape, but will need new grips.The Chiefs Special, which later came to be known as the Smith & Wesson Model 36 was not the first production .38 Special snubby; that honor goes to the Colt Detective Special in 1927. From your serial #and the features on it, according to my database, it's officially named ".38 Chiefs (plural but not possessive) Special" - Model of 1953 'New' J frame, and most likely shipped in Jan -Feb of 1959. It should be stamped Model 36 on the frame, seen with the Yoke opened and cyl swung out.
