Apr 7, 2020. #1. Well I just checked the timing on my johnson 140 and in forward idle it’s supposed to be 4-6 degrees “throttle pickup”. I was at 16!! It was warmed up and in a tub of water. When I moved the timer base rubber stop forward till it hit, I was getting 4 degrees.Sep 3, 2015. #2. Full throttle spark advance is the only adjustment. The timer base bangs up against the adjustment screw at full advance. It is a long screw with a rubber cap, starboard side, behind the top end of the vertical throttle lever. Spec is 28 degrees at full advance @ 4500 RPM in gear, on the boat on the lake. Or with a test prop.manual says idle 4 deg wide open throttle 20deg. It far too long a procedure to do here. You DO NOT adjust the throttle cable to set idle speed or anything related to it. It is a throttle cable adjustment only, again, that is covered in the manual.
